On Sunday, twelve families from Headington Baptist Church, Oxford, joined me after the morning service for a family GodVenture event in the Priory garden. The weather was good, so we had our picnics before we embarked on some different ways to explore the Bible. In one activity, families made their own mini book of ‘Jesus and the storm’. They made pictures with pasta or their bodies and printed them from the digital polaroid cameras. They also enacted the story with boats on paddling pool lakes of Galilee and did noisy audio versions with home-made percussion instruments.
In the relaxed atmosphere families were free to have football breaks whenever they needed and to adapt the activities as they went along to make them work well for their family. After everyone had tried three Bible activities, we had a break for drinks and chat, before heading back to try out some of the 15+ creative prayer activities in trugs all over the garden.
Praying with sweets was particularly popular, but others had a good time praying with marzipan, Twister, boxes, ball pool balls and creepy crawlies! At the end of the session, each family took home a copy of Our Family GodVenture to help them continue trying out new ways to read the Bible and pray together. It seemed like everyone had lots of fun and I’m looking forward to the next event in Birmingham later this month.

Thank you for the inspiration – we especially enjoyed using water, sweets and pasta! The opportunity to share worries was valuable, as we have just moved house.
What a great day – all they families had a prayer adventure! My family really enjoyed the creep crawlies bucket where we prayed for fears our family faced and had quite a lot of fun with the bugs. Victoria organised a very creative set of activities to inspire my family to get into the Bible more and pray more imaginatively. Thank you.
